In the end, a few athletes managed to rise above the rest, sometimes by fractions of a second, to claim the title of Canadian Champion. Fastest run of the day went to Kyle Sangers in the Junior Expert Men category, who made the trip all the way from Kingston, Ontario with a time of 3:24.58.
Andrew Mitchell of Victoria, B.C. took the elite men category followed closely by Chris Del Bosco and Dean Tennant . The Elite women’s category was won by Kovarik Racing rider Claire Buchar with Casey Brown and Miranda Miller at her heels.
As Sangers placed first with the fastest time of the day, Riley Suhan, from Golden, B.C. claimed second and Luke Stevens of Calgary, AB placed third. Lauren Rosser of Squamish, B.C. placed first over Kelsey Begg, separated in time due to a spill in the Infamous Cliffs of Insanity.
Heavy rains late in the week played on the minds of a few riders. Saturday had slippery sections but the course ran fast for Sunday’s finals due to the scorching heat.
“It’s drying out quite a bit,” said Claire Buchar, women’s elite winner. “Yesterday [Friday], it was raining all day. Today the course is dusty in sections and super slippery and boggy in others. I am pretty stoked that we have a track like this for the Canadian DH Championships with lots of steep cornering and technical sections. It’s good for the development of the sport.”
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone for coming out. We look forward to more technical and fast riding at next weekend’s Canada and BC Cup races.
